a failed trip to the archive

I decided to make a trip to the library on my drizzly Wednesday off uni, in an attempt to search out the March 2005 issue of Vogue featuring the editorial shot by Laurie Bartley. Annoyingly once getting to the library I realised someone had obviously beaten me to it and the book featuring said shot was no where to be seen. LITERALLY 40 minutes of searching, and asking about 4 members of staff later it did not appear, so I decided instead of wasting my time in such an extensive library to have a flick through some of the other issues for a bit of fun. I came across this shoot in a 2005 edition of British Vogue and immediately fell in love with it. Stupidly I didn't note the name of the photographer or even what month's edition it was from so looks like another trip to the library will have to be taken to follow that up (and find that elusive march 2005 issue).

Perhaps its my love of all things Icelandic, or my perchance for a nautical stripe, but something about these images caught my eye. The colour palette in a few of the images along with the almost comical symmetry remind me very much of Wes Anderson's cinematography which when emulated well (unlike every the direct rip offs in advert ever in 2017) can be really effective.

Again I just REALLY love the scenery in this, and the way the model's outfit is almost a direct mirror image the green base of the mountain and the snowcapped peak. Also can you go wrong with a nice stripe? I don't think you can.

Another amazing outfit set against a magnificent boat, although lacking in fjords I can still appreciate the beauty of this shot and the coherent colour palette throughout.

A dreamy (again v wes Anderson v moonrise kingdom) colour palette, this image appears to be less static than the others. This freedom makes a nice change in a editorial so focused on block colours and the idea of regiment.

This image is my absolute favourite. I love the range of warm primary colours in the foreground set against the dramatic and cold looking background. The whole thing just screams fun to me and reminds me bizarrely of High School Musical two, which probably isn't the high brow reference the photographer was looking for, but I'd take it as a compliment.
