Well would you look at that a teeange girl harking on about Arctic Monkeys, what a revelation, but i just had to write a post about this album as Arctic Monkeys have only bloody gone and done it again.

Their newest release Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino (TBHC for ease's sake) is a cracking album and I must say it was well worth the wait.
As the guardian put it "Sheffield’s finest swap earthy rock for lunar vibes. It could lose rather than win fans, but that may be the point…"
I am aware I grew up listening to Arctic Monkeys on the radio, and was 14 in peak AM tumblr era- so naturally I fit into the Turner adoring teenage demographic that the band was trying to shake off. But unlike many of my peers I am far from dissapointed by the new album- infact I am ecstatic at the result.
I didn't realise a concept album about a hotel on the moon was missing from my life, but having heard the new album I'm not sure how I ever managed to live without it. As per Turner hits the mark with his witty yet beautifully articulated lyrics. The album opens with 'I just wanted to be one of the strokes' which really sets the albums tone from the get go. A stark and weirdly to the point admission from a man pretty partial to a flowery metaphor. The album is loaded with satirical jabs, with which Turner works his magic; turning them into lyrical- scentences you can't help want tatooed on every inch of your body.

TBHC is heavily reminiscent of the Arctic Monkeys Humbug/ Suck it and See era, alongside sounding similar to Turner's Last Shadow Puppets side project. The whole album is heavily influenced- (but what isn't nowadays?), of course the most obvious the Bowie influence with the space vibes thing, but you can't help but notice a lot of other references throughout. The opening to One Point Perspective has proper Dr Dre's Still Dre vibes, a lot of the songs have a very 60's Lou Reed vibe, with an underlying soulful funk vibe to the whole album. Then theres the elephant in the room. The Leonard Cohen and Nick Cave 'influences', influence seeming too weak of a word.
I've heard a lot of people complaining about Turner's influences. Some saying the album is merely a rip off. People saying they miss the old arctic monkeys, in my humble opinion, are missing the point or just haven't given the new album enough of their time. It is impossible to ignore that Thbc is an Arctic Monkey's album, their signature sound still comes through, yet this time it has been molded and developed into a mature masterpiece. They are a band defined by their vastly differing era's and I feel as though that is a lot of the fun.
I am a huge fan of the album and I feel like the old fan's need to move foward and appreciate this experiment with becoming a Nick Cave tribute act.
