return to twin peaks

Having first got into twin peaks when I was around 11 (wildly age inappropriate I now realise but I don’t think it’s done me much harm?) and watching the entire boxset within the space of a month, closely followed up by the Fire Walk with me movie; I have lost track of the amount of times I must’ve seen the show. When I heard back in 2014 there was going to be a follow up series I must say I was absolutely beside myself with excitement. The release date of 2017 seemed like an age away for 14-year-old me, and as the years dragged their heels, what with GSCE’s and A levels to distract me, my Twin Peaks obsession faded, and I kind of forgot about the new series’ impending arrival.

That was until the other day, when I finally got around to starting the newest series.
Naturally, in true Lynch style, I hadn’t a clue what was going on until at least an hour into the first episode (and to be fair two episodes in I’m not much wiser to it), but despite this I was HOOKED.

I absolutely adored the way the series has been transported into the 21st century. Lynch references the modern world while somehow managing to maintain its iconic 80’s whimsical glamour. I like the way Lynch hasn’t just decided to ignore the development of technology, he seamlessly slides devices into the plot line without letting them become a driving force, like a tragic modern crime drama. The cgi and effects used are reminiscent of the original series, again I’m glad of it, it seems less contrived and more authentically Lynch.

Only being two episodes in, I can’t really pass comment on the plotline as of yet, but I can say I am incredibly impressed by the casting choices made. The series manages to retain many of the key actors from the orignal cast. Laura Palmer, the log lady, the Chief - and of course Special agent Dale Cooper. I'm aware the ageing of these cast members is of course natural, but I just love the way their new look knits in with the new cast members. Again the locations chosen fit well with the drama, and the addition of New York scenes once again brings the series up to date. I have to say however that I'm yet to be blown away by any of the styling choices made. Gone are the classic outfits of Audrey and Shelley's iconic diner uniform, I can only hope the wardrobes improve as the series develops.
