denim trends

Thanks to the skinny jean revolution it would seem as though brands are pulling out al the stop to keep their denim departments relevant, making 2018 and 19 a really fun time for trousers. These are just some of the movements WGSN are deeming big in the coming seasons.

"Crushed velvets blended with complementary fabrics create shiny, soft, plush silhouettes." Velvet doesn't seem to be going anywhere (thank god) , I am thankful for the abundence of the luxe material in stores, theres nothing better than swishing around feeling like a rennaissance royal.

"For A/W 19/20, plaids become more bold and colourful, and feature traditional patterns. Recycled denim adds accented elements, creating more directional silhouettes. Mixing and matching plaid tones takes this trend further." I am enjoying the whole patterned trouser and jacket thing going on at the moment and you can't go wrong with a classic check. When worn the right way i am completely in love with this look, however I do fear when done wrong it can look a bit tacky, like a failed 1970's punk reference.

"Corduroy denim was called out for S/S 19 in smaller and lighter wales, and we expect this trend to continue in A/W 19/20 in more robust wales." I am so here for the cord trend, now that is a 70's look I can get behind. I'm loving the inlfux of bright cords, such as the oranges and bright blues I've seen around. Colour blocking is something I love massively- basically I just love tacky things and is there anything tackier than an orange cord suit, I dont think so.

"Brands look to reduce their carbon footprint by taking advantage of deadstock fabrics sitting idle at garment makers and fabric mills." I mean you can't criticize anyones effort at sustainability, and I do like the way most of these pieces look- but I can't help but feel as though many of these efforts often end up looking like a b-list Vetements? Maybe thats just me... However if its good for the environment I fully endorse it.

"Shine and shimmer is often only used as an accent on denim. The S/S 19 Gloss trend offered a high-impact element for the season." I really like this trend, I think some aspects are super cool, like vinyl jeans (although my thighs are WAY too big for me to ever dare), PVC coats and vinyl skirts. However I am SICK of brands making perfectly lovely clothing and whacking a metallic sheen on it. I'm just bored of this forced relevance. I may be genZ but just because something is irredescent doesn't mean I'm suddenly going to salivate over it. Its all just a bit too forever 21 for my liking.

"Digital influences in fabric have steadily increased over the last few seasons." I have to say this isnt really something I'd noticed hugely in stores. The odd trouser here and there i urban outfitters. I'm not totally opposed to the movement- but I do feel as though it can only be pulled off by someone who is truly cool- think ASAP Rocky, maybe not me.

"A/W 19/20 furry denim includes fabric blends that resemble long and short-haired fur looks, all offered in a variety of tones, offering a departure from popular all-over sherpa looks. " I mean I do really like this look, but that Sherpa jacket from urban outfitters is currently plauging the UK. Its a lovely jacket but why is it you can't leave your room without seeing about 8000000 girls in it? Its gotten to the point where I've retired my sherpa coat I purchased in 2012 until the mayhem dies down. A strong trend but one I fear is just getting BORING.

"Deeper and slightly darker tones will impact coloured trends for A/W 19/20. Following on from S/S 19 colours, these tones are a slight departure from denim traditions". I'm well into a good navy blue and forest green so this news is a piece I like to hear. I rate it.

"Completely see-through denim evolves from the S/S 19 transparent trend, which offered a more toned-down approach featuring transparent elements as details." I think this is super cool, maybe not all that wearable day to day (unless you fancy ending up on some sort of register). I like how difficult it is to make it work, maybe it won't end up totally dull like that god forsaken Sherpa jacket. I'm excited to see how this one develops.
